Know Your Heart: How Early Detection Can Help Prevent Stroke
Every five minutes, someone in the UK has a stroke. The good news is that up to 90% of strokes are
preventable. That’s why OMRON Healthcare UK has joined forces with the Stroke Association to help
people understand the biggest hidden risks of Hypertension and Atrial Fibrillation (AFib).
AFib is an irregular heart rhythm that is often undiagnosed and can increase the risk of stroke by up to
five times in people with hypertension1. Because it often has no symptoms, many people don’t know
they have it until it’s too late. Together, OMRON and the Stroke Association want to change that:
studies show that early detection and treatment of Atrial Fibrillation can reduce stroke risk by 66%2.
Why Heart Monitoring Matters
Simple, regular blood pressure checks — at home, in pharmacies, or at your GP — can help you spot
issues like high blood pressure or AFib early on.
“Detecting AFib early can be lifesaving,” says Karen Sanders, Managing Director EMEA at OMRON
Healthcare. “We’re committed to giving people the knowledge and tools they need to take control of
their heart health and prevent strokes before they happen.”
With OMRON’s revolutionary Intellisense AFib technology, now routine blood pressure checks at-
home automatically screen for Atrial Fibrillation, empowering you to take care of your heart.
Real Stories, Real Impact
Keith’s story: A stroke that could have been prevented
Keith, 74, from Brighton, had a stroke at home. Thanks to his wife’s quick recognition of the FAST
signs (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 999), he received urgent
treatment and recovered well.
Later, hospital tests revealed undiagnosed AFib, despite previous all-clear ECGs. Keith now believes
that more regular heart monitoring could have detected his condition earlier — and possibly prevented
his stroke.
Elaine’s story: “It happened just before my 45th birthday”
Elaine, 46, from Clackmannanshire, felt dizzy and noticed her face drooping while doing housework.
Her family knew to act quickly. A hospital CT scan confirmed she had suffered a stroke, caused by
high blood pressure.
Now, she’s sharing her story to remind others — at any age — to keep track of their heart health and
recognise the warning signs.
